Integrating Bandwidth Steering Into Current Network Systems

Bandwidth steering with silicon photonic optical circuit switches in the context of HPC and data center networks have shown great promise in its ability to reconfigure network topology for better performance. However, many open problems related to optimal switching frequency, routing and congestion control protocols, etc., under different topological configurations still exist. In this project, we aim to examine these system design problems and investigate the feasibility of integrating bandwidth steering into high performance networks under various system constraints. The project will involve testing bandwidth steering under various network configurations and constraints such as bursty traffic or network bottleneck using simulated network testbeds such as Netbench and Mininet.
