Machine learning applications to satellite based surveillance of tailing dams and pollution sources for early warning of risks

The researchers will work on developing automatic processing algorithms for satellite data using Google Earth Engine or similar tools integrated with imagery available through Google Earth or other sources to identify temporal changes in the state of dams, tailing ponds, waste heaps associated with mining and other activities that constitute a mudslide or leakage hazard for downstream populations. Initial applications in the Appalachian region are of interest.
