Soil condition sensing using optical techniques offers the potential to explain the effectiveness of a number of urban soil structures. In this project, we will use commercially available spectral sensors together with hydrogel immobilized indicators to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, and chemical composition of urban soil systems (green roof, tree pits, and park recreational soils). Field work and coordination with the wireless networking of the sensor will also be involved.
